Canterbury Heritage Paintings by Raymond Morris
Raymond Morris is a Christchurch artist who works internationally, and specialises in painting heritage buildings in pen and ink and watercolours.
Today he resides in Christchurch, and has compiled an extensive catalogue of paintings of historical significance in the province and beyond. He favours an architectural style and therefore is noted for his fine attention to detail and historical accuracy in his paintings.
As well as painting many fine buildings of the present era, one of his great passions is recreating in a colour painting the historic buildings of bygone years. Prior to the 1950s, black and white photography was all that was available in most cases. Now Raymond is able to recreate in a colour painting the historic fabric of a particular period to be admired and treasured by all, using a series of black and white photographs as reference and historical observations for authenticity. The artist has also used in cases of existing old buildings his licence to “tidy up” their aspect by deleting some superfluous signs, TV aerials, and other appurtenances of the modern era, to show them as near as possible to their original appearance.
More recently he has concentrated on adding to a series of notable Christchurch buildings that have been demolished in the 2010/11 earthquakes, some paintings were completed prior to the earthquakes, but as a whole they compose a catalogue of local built fabric that is now part of Lost Christchurch.
Raymond has generously allowed his images to be used on this site. They are licensed for use for personal non-commercial purposes with recognition to the artist.
